About DCPC

The DC Philosophy Consortium brings philosophy faculty and students from across Washington, Maryland, and Virginia into the same room, so that work begun on one campus finds readers and critics on another. We bring the full range of philosophical traditions to questions of justice and democracy in an age of technological change, and we do that work for the sake of a more just world.

Who it’s for

Over 500 philosophers, a Metro ride apart.

The DMV includes philosophy faculty at more than a dozen colleges and universities (American University, Catholic University of America, Dominican House of Studies, Gallaudet University, George Mason University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, Howard University, Marymount University, Montgomery College, Northern Virginia Community College, Trinity Washington University, and the University of Maryland). Most of us see colleagues from other campuses only at national meetings, if at all.

For faculty

Regular, low-stakes occasions to share work and meet colleagues across institutions.

For students

Graduate and undergraduate students gain a wider intellectual community and contact with faculty beyond their own campus.

For the city

Philosophy in the civic life of a place where questions of justice, governance and technology are argued every day.

The consortium

A shared calendar and a few well-chosen events each semester.

The consortium is

  • A shared calendar and a few well-chosen events each semester
  • Open to every tradition and approach in philosophy
  • Hosted on rotating campuses, as departments are able
  • A small commitment: one contact per department, about two online meetings a semester, and circulating announcements

It is not

  • A professional society with dues or fees
  • A replacement for departments’ own programming
  • Tied to any one school of thought

How DCPC is organized

A light structure, shared across campuses

Founding Director, DCPC

Dr. Leigh M. Johnson, American University.
